Message from H.E. Warsan Awil Muhumed
Head of the SRS. Culture and Tourism Bureau
The Somali Regional State Culture and Tourism Bureau carries a profound responsibility to safeguard the identity, values, and heritage of our people while advancing tourism as a strategic driver of socio economic transformation. Our mandate goes beyond preservation. It requires us to actively transform cultural and tourism resources into opportunities that strengthen livelihoods, promote unity, and contribute to sustainable development across the region.
The cultural heritage of the Somali people represents a living legacy that reflects our history, traditions, language, and collective memory. It includes both tangible elements such as historical sites, monuments, artifacts, and cultural landscapes, as well as intangible elements such as oral traditions, performing arts, customary practices, indigenous knowledge systems, and language. Protecting this heritage requires continuous research, documentation, conservation, and community engagement. We are committed to ensuring that these cultural assets are preserved with integrity and passed on to future generations in a meaningful and sustainable manner.
At the same time, tourism presents a significant opportunity for economic growth, employment creation, and regional integration. The Bureau is working to identify, develop, and promote tourism destinations that showcase the unique cultural and natural diversity of the Somali Regional State. This includes strengthening infrastructure, enhancing service quality, and creating an enabling environment for investment. By positioning the region as a competitive and attractive destination, we aim to generate inclusive economic opportunities that benefit local communities.
Our work is guided by strong institutional frameworks, effective coordination, and evidence based planning. We collaborate with government institutions, private sector actors, development partners, and community stakeholders to ensure that our interventions are impactful and sustainable. We also prioritize transparency, accountability, and professionalism in all aspects of our operations.
I call upon all stakeholders including cultural practitioners, youth, investors, and the diaspora to actively engage in preserving our heritage and promoting our region. Together, we can build a vibrant culture and tourism sector that reflects our identity, strengthens our economy, and contributes to a prosperous and sustainable future.
