The Tourism Research and Development Directorate is responsible for researching, planning, and developing tourism as a key socio-economic sector in the region. It works to expand tourism activities to generate employment, increase revenue, and ensure that local communities benefit from sustainable tourism growth.

The Directorate conducts studies on natural, historical, and heritage-based attractions, supports infrastructure development, and facilitates integration of tourism resources into education and regional planning. It collects and disseminates tourism data, monitors sector performance, and collaborates with public and private stakeholders to improve services and facilities.

It also promotes community participation, evaluates tourism investment projects, ensures safe and quality experiences for domestic and international visitors, and supports evidence-based tourism policy development.
