Historical Background of the Bureau
Establishment, Mandate, and Institutional Development of the Somali Regional State Bureau of Culture and Tourism
The Bureau of Tourism and Culture is one of the governmental bureaus in Ethiopia responsible for providing cultural and tourism-related services to communities across the country. The Bureau plays a significant role in strengthening national identity by promoting cultural values, preserving heritage, and supporting the development of languages and traditions of various nations and nationalities.
What distinguishes the Bureau from other public institutions is its special focus on safeguarding and developing cultural heritage while promoting sustainable tourism development. The Bureau works to study, preserve, and promote historical and natural tourism destinations, ensuring that these valuable resources contribute to social, cultural, and economic development at both national and regional levels.
In addition, the Bureau gives particular attention to communities whose languages and cultural practices are at risk of disappearing. Through research, documentation, cultural promotion programs, and community engagement initiatives, the Bureau actively supports the revival, preservation, and development of indigenous cultures and languages.
The Bureau also undertakes activities aimed at improving tourism services, enhancing public awareness about cultural and historical heritage, and encouraging community participation in protecting tourism sites. By strengthening cultural identity and developing tourism resources, the Bureau contributes to sustainable development and promotes the rich cultural diversity of Ethiopia.
The Somali Regional State Bureau of Tourism and Culture, one of the crucial institutions in the region, was established in accordance with Proclamation Article 24/1994 E.C. Since its establishment, the Bureau has been working to promote the cultural heritage, language development, and tourism potential of the Somali Regional State while preserving historical assets for present and future generations.
