Message from the Director of Cultural Heritage and Indigenous Knowledge Development Directorate

The Cultural Heritage and Indigenous Knowledge Development Directorate is responsible for safeguarding the living cultural expressions and indigenous knowledge systems that define the identity of the community. These elements are essential for maintaining social cohesion, cultural continuity, and sustainable development.

The Directorate undertakes the identification, documentation, and preservation of intangible cultural heritage, including oral traditions, social practices, customary laws, rituals, and traditional conflict resolution systems. This work is carried out through research, archiving, and community based engagement to ensure that cultural knowledge is accurately recorded and protected.

In addition to preservation, the Directorate promotes indigenous knowledge related to traditional medicine, pastoralism, agriculture, environmental conservation, and climate adaptation. This knowledge is critical for enhancing resilience and supporting sustainable livelihoods in the region.

The Directorate collaborates closely with elders, cultural leaders, and institutions to ensure that indigenous knowledge systems are respected, protected, and integrated into development initiatives. Through these efforts, it contributes to strengthening identity and ensuring that cultural heritage remains a valuable resource for present and future generations.
