Somali Region Marks International Mother Language Day in Jigjiga

The International Mother Language Day, celebrated annually on February 21, was officially commemorated in Jigjiga city by the Somali Regional State Culture and Tourism Bureau.

The event was opened by the Minister of Culture and Tourism Bureau, Mrs. Warsan Awil Muhumed, and attended by the Deputy Head of the President’s Office, Mr. Mohamed Muse Gure, alongside senior government officials, religious leaders, and key stakeholders.

This year’s celebration was held under the theme
“Mother Language is Essential Protect and Promote Your Language”, highlighting the importance of preserving and developing native languages as a foundation for cultural identity and community development.

The annual observance highlights the critical role of mother languages in education, communication, and cultural preservation. Participants emphasized the need to strengthen efforts in promoting the Somali language and other local languages across the region.

The Somali Regional State continues to support initiatives aimed at safeguarding linguistic heritage while encouraging communities to take pride in their native languages.
